MCLEANSBORO, Ill. (AP) - Authorities say a 79-year-old woman shot and wounded her granddaughter during an argument in the older woman's southern Illinois home.

Hamilton County Sheriff Gregory Brenner says it appears the grandmother shot the younger woman twice Monday in the rural Dahlgren home while trying to defend herself.

Brenner tells Local 6 that the granddaughter came into the home which caused the grandmother to feel threatened. The grandmother shot her with a .38 caliber revolver.

No charges have been filed, because the grandmother was not the aggressor, and it is being considered a domestic assault/battery incident.

Sheriff Brenner consulted with the state's attorney, and told us there's a possibility it could go in front of a grand jury.

Brenner did say that there had been some conflict in the family in the past, but nothing as serious as this incident.

The 39-year-old victim was flown to a hospital in Evansville, Ind., with what Brenner calls very serious injuries.

A hospital spokeswoman says she was in fair condition Tuesday.
