State police urge caution after construction zone crashDUQUOIN, Ill. — An afternoon crash on Interstate 57 has Illinois State Police reminding motorists to drive carefully in work zones. ISP said the driver of a Fed Ex truck pulling two trailers changed lanes in a construction zone north of West Frankfort's southbound exit Tuesday afternoon. The driver, 49-year-old Steffon D. Bernard, of Memphis, Tennessee, made the lane change to avoid striking a passenger car. The rear trailer shifted, causing the trailer to roll. While still trying to avoid the passenger car, Bernard's trailer struck the back of an Illinois Department of Transportation pickup. The pickup's driver, 62-year-old Paul M. Forby, of Benton, Illinois, was not injured. ISP said citations for Bernard are pending further investigation. They reminded drivers when traveling through a construction zone to pay close attention to the signs and obey speed limits. |
