PADUCAH, Ky. - USEC is officially notifying its employees at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant of layoffs that are scheduled to begin in August.

The notifications are being provided to all salaried employees and employees who are represented by the United Steelworkers International Union, Local 550 – a total of about 1,034 workers.

USEC says initial layoffs of about 160 employees will occur between August 5 and August 19. Additional layoffs could then occur in multiple stages during 2013 and 2014. The timing of the layoffs is dependent upon business needs and the transition of the site back to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

DOE announced last Friday that it would not extend its contract with USEC to continue operations at the plant. USEC plans to return parts of the plant to DOE over the next year.
