Work on US 51 Ohio River Bridge delayed until July

WICKLIFFE, Ky. - A project to repair the US 51 Ohio River Bridge will not begin until after July 7.

The delay comes at the request of a contractor for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Once the project begins, the bridge will have a strictly enforced seven-foot maximum load width for about 60 days. The restrictions will lead to a lengthy detour for larger vehicles traveling through the area.

While the exact start date is not yet known, the KYTC says the contractor will provide about a one week notice of a specific start date for the restrictions.

The bridge connects Wickliffe, Kentucky with Cairo, Illinois. About 5,500 vehicles cross the bridge daily, with commercial trucks making up about 35 percent of the traffic flow.
