Work zone extension happens early than planned, causes traffic issues

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. - Road construction is causing some major post-holiday traffic backup on Interstate-24 in McCracken County, Kentucky.

Traffic cones removed before the Independence Day holiday were replaced Friday as expected.

Earlier in the week, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials said cones would be placed between the 3 and 10 mile markers Friday with the work zone being extended to the 16 mile marker on Monday, July 8.

However, the work zone extension happened three days early.  That caught some motorists off-guard and caused several traffic issues.

KYTC officials urge caution while traveling through the work zone.
