UNION COUNTY, Ill. - A woman charged with kidnapping a newborn child and tying up his mother made her first appearance in court Tuesday.

44-year-old Karen Casper Nichols is charged with aggravated kidnapping, armed robbery, and aggravated unlawful restraint charges.

Prosecutors allege that she bound the newborn baby boy's mother Lindsey McHughs with a scarf, duct taped her mouth and eyes, then stole her newborn baby at knife-point last Friday.

That same day, the child was reunited with his mother.

The judge appointed a public defender for Nichols. She's expected back in court July 30.

Neighbors told Local 6 on Monday that for weeks Nichols led them to believe she was pregnant and would deliver her child this week.

The judge ordered that if Nichols makes bail she must stay away from Lindsey McHughs and her baby.
