SPRINGFIELD, Ill.— The new custom-made copper doors on the Illinois Capitol are not the only part of the building's renovation drawing scrutiny for their high cost.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Saturday that the offices of 19 state senators are being outfitted with nearly $500,000 worth of new furniture.

Broken down, that means each senator moving into a new office is getting $7,100 worth of chairs, credenzas, desks and tables.

It's being financed with a borrowing plan that runs through 2030, well beyond the furniture's likely lifespan.

The previous office furniture was put in storage with plans to reuse most of it when the renovation work was complete.

Some has been reused, but Capitol Architect J. Richard Alsop III says much of it won't work aesthetically or functionally in the new space.
