Carbondale City Council elects former city employee as new mayor

CARBONDALE, IL - Donald Monty will be the next mayor of Carbondale, Illinois.

The Carbondale City Council elected Monty to take over the role when Joel Fritzler leaves office next month. The meeting was held on Tuesday night.

Monty worked as a city of Carbondale employee for 35 years before retiring in 2006. In his last 14 years, he was instrumental in preparing, balancing, and implementing Carbondale's city budget.

He will take over the role on February 4th. Fritzler is leaving the city to take a job with Northern Arizona University.
