CARBONDALE, Ill. - A man is in critical condition in a St.Louis hospital after a Wednesday evening shooting in Carbondale.

Carbondale Police said someone fired multiple shots into a crowd of people in the 400 block of East Jackson Street around 9 p.m.

Thursday, police arrested 23-year-old Ronald Sanders of Murphysboro and charged him with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He's being held in the Williamson County Jail. Police tracked him down in Marion.

Investigators believe the suspect and the victim knew each other. They aren't releasing a motive at this time.

Thursday, flowers sat in front of 423 E. Jackson.

"This is like a block full of nothing but family," said Michael Wooley.

Wooley said he left work last night when he got a call that someone shot his cousin in the head.

"I just (saw) the police out here, and everybody was out here you know, supporting Donathan," he said.

Wooley said Donathan Brown is the victim, a man in his thirties. He said Brown was standing in the yard, talking among a small group of people.

Family members told Local 6 a black car drove up and someone started firing shots. Carbondale Police would not confirm whether the shooting was a drive-by.

"I heard it was five, six, seven shots. People was just firing," said Wooley.

Carbondale Police will only say they are investigating the shooting and won't comment on circumstances leading up to the crime.

They haven't officially released the name of the victim and have one suspect in custody.

"He (doesn't) argue, fight with anybody. He's a good dude," said Wooley.

Wooley said his family is praying for his cousin because he may not survive.

"Right now they are saying that he (isn't) going to make it," he said, "They're saying that his brain is swelling up."
