Fatal motorcycle crash in Massac County

MASSAC COUNTY, Ill – A motorcycle collision involving a deer has left one woman dead in Massac County, Illinois.

It happened on Monday, November 11th at approximately 4:00 p.m. A Harley Davidson was traveling southbound on US 45 driven by 49 year-old Paul Meyers of Grand Chain, Illinois. A deer crossed the roadway from the east, and the motorcycle was unable to avoid impact.

Both Meyers and his passenger, 47 year-old Valerie Caulfield of Joppa, Illinois, were thrown from the vehicle. Caulfield was pronounced dead at the scene. Meyers was transported to Deaconess Hospital by air evac.

Meyers was not wearing a helmet. Caulfield, however, was wearing one.

Meyers is being charged with violation of classification and operating an uninsured vehicle. The investigation into this crash is ongoing.
