Illinois State Police to investigate death of southern Illinois suspect

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. - A southern Illinois police officer has been suspended pending the results of a death investigation.

The move comes as the Illinois State Police was asked to assist with the investigation of a suspect's death in Franklin County.

Franklin County State's Attorney Evan L. Owens says Roy Barnhart died after he was arrested by the Buckner Police Department. Barnhart was arrested early Sunday and was taken from that location directly to the Franklin County Hospital. He died later that morning in a St. Louis hospital.

An officer with the Buckner Police Department was suspended pending the results of ISP's investigation.

No other details have been released regarding the investigation.
