JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. - A local mother faces manslaughter charges in the death of her newborn son.

Jackson County authorities arrested 25-year-old Casey Parnell on Thursday and charged her with involuntary manslaughter, concealment of a homicidal death, and concealment of a death.

Investigators said she put her newborn son Gabriel Parnell in a trash bag after giving birth to him on January 22, 2011 and then tried to cover up the death.

Parnell made her first appearance by video conference Friday morning.

She told the judge she needed a public defender in the case.

The preliminary hearing will be held December 28th at 9:30 a.m.

Parnell's bond is set at $750,000. She's being held at the Jackson County Jail.

We left a message for the Jackson County State's Attorney Michael Carr to get more details on the case, but as of air time our message hadn't been returned.
