Metropolis Fire Department battles two fires at once
METROPOLIS, Ill. - Metropolis fire fighters were busy overnight when not one, but two fires broke out within just a few hours of each other and within just a few blocks of each other.
The fires destroyed two homes on the west side of Metropolis.
Fire fighters struggled to fight two fires at once, and had to call Massac County Fire Department for help.
Around midnight a house on West 6th Street burst into flames.
Metropolis Fire Department responded to the home and got its residents out to safety.
They thought their job was over, but just as fire fighters got the first fire under control, a second blaze broke out just a mile down the road.
Metropolis fire fighters had to call Massac County to help control the second fire which erupted around 3 a.m.
The simply did not have enough man-power to fight two fires at once.
Two blocks away on West 4th Street, Charity Thomas recalled the events of Thursday night.
Her aunt and niece lived on the bottom floor of the home.
For whatever reason, the two had decided to spend the night at grandmas.
They weren't home when the fire broke out, but were forced to watch their lives turn to ash for what Thomas says was close to four hours.
"It didn't end until about seven o'clock whenever they finally all left here," said Thomas.
Thomas says she is just grateful her family is safe.
"They could have been home, gotten hurt, they might not have made it out," said Thomas.
She appreciates the fire fighters that were able to put out the flames before the situation worsened.
