Motorcycle crash kills driver, passenger flown to St. Louis hospital
JACKSON COUNTY, Ill. - The Jackson County Sheriff's Department responded to Makanda Road a mile east of US Hwy 51 in Makanda around 7pm Saturday night in response to a motocycle accident.
The driver of the motorcycle, 36 year-old James Greenwood and his fiance, passenger Shelly Dwyer, also 36, were taken to Memorial Hospital in Carbondale, Illinois. Greenwood later died at the hospital and Dwyer was later flown by helicopter to a St. Louis hospital.
The sheriff's department says the two were traveling east on Makanda Road when it hit a guardrail and continued down a steep embankment.
