One dead after Mt. Vernon stabbing, suspect in custody

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. - A Mount Vernon, Illinois man has died due to injuries sustained from a fight that resulted in a stabbing.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a fight that happened outside of the Mount Vernon Gun and Sportsman's Club around 7:50 p.m. on Tuesday. Upon arrival, deputies and emergency personnel came across 37 year-old Eric W. Houser who had been stabbed. He was transported to Crossroads Hospital where he later died of his injuries.

An initial investigation indicates the fight occurred between Houser and another subject, 47 year-old Sammy H. Kehrer of Mount Vernon. Kehrer was taken into custody later that evening without incident. He has been charged with aggravated battery.

This case is still under investigation.
