UPDATE 10:28 a.m. -- The Alexander County, Illinois coroner tells Local 6 the construction worker killed in yesterday's accident was 51-year-old Zane A. Martin from Stonefort, Illinois.
ALEXANDER COUNTY, Ill. — The Illinois State Police confirmed to Local 6 a construction accident at Illinois Route 146 and Route 3 has claimed the life of one person.
The accident happened on an extension of a four-lane highway to Route 3. Construction crews were working on a large box culvert. Two of four lanes were completed and crews were working on the other two lanes.
They were forming the culvert on site. While pouring the deck, the support collapsed, causing one worker to fall and become trapped. This worker was freed. It has not yet been confirmed that this worker is the person who died.
Emergency responders are on scene. The deceased's name has not been released. There are no other injuries and everyone else has been accounted for.
