Prescribed burn planned in Shawnee National Forest
POPE COUNTY, Ill. – If the weather holds up, the U.S. Forest Service plans to burn about 1,300 acres in the One Horse Gap area of the forest March 15th.
The land is in the Pope County part of the forest.
Forest Service Fire staff will keep a close eye on the smoke created by the burn.
Officials are asking the public to stay out of the area. They’re also asking for everyone to avoid Gap Dam Road and Benham Hill Road the day of the burn.
Most of the smoke will be visible in the afternoon and will disappear after dark, however, it is possible the smoke will be around a bit longer.
