CHICAGO - A local airport finished out last year as the fourth busiest airport in the state of Illinois.

The Southern Illinois Airport trailed behind only Chicago's O'Hare and Midway airports, and St. Louis' downtown airport in Cahokia. The 2013 result was the highest finish for the airport in its 64 year history.

Airport Manager Gary Shafer attributes the success to generally favorable flying weather, the lack of runway closures, and strong flying by the Southern Illinois University flight program.
