Team Marcus investigation ends, money recouped
MASSAC COUNTY, Ill. - New details concerning the investigation into a misuse of funds. The Massac County, Illinois Sheriff's Department says they've completed their investigation.
MASSAC COUNTY, Ill. - Investigators are trying to figure out what happened to hundreds of dollars collected during a fundraiser for a local man injured in a motorcycle accident. The Team Marcus benefit was organized by Marcus' relatives, but Marcus said he never got all of the money they raised.
Marcus Hines is still nursing injuries from a bad motorcycle accident in April. He has a rod in his left leg, a limp arm, and no spleen. Doctors took out his gall bladder, and he also has some other little fractures. As his body heals, his finances on the other hand, are getting worse.
His bills before insurance kicks in add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Marcus said, "The helicopter ride is $40,000. I have a bill for the hospital that's $300,000. I've got a bill from Lourdes that's $220,000." That's why a family member came up with the idea for a Team Marcus fundraiser. "I didn't ask for this," said Marcus.
Marcus did eventually ask Massac County Sheriff's Office Investigator Chad Kaylor to get involved when he started hearing rumors about missing money. Kaylor said, "There was not much money given to them, and they believed there was more money raised that he did not receive."
Kaylor said they don't know how much money is missing, though, because there is no bank account and no records. He said, "The people that set it up in the beginning do happen to be family members. They set it up with good intentions to raise money for him. Some time during the course of this, money just came up missing."
It could possibly result in a criminal offense for the fundraisers. Kaylor said, "It really depends on how much money, also maybe some kind of forgery." It's definitely a disappointment for Marcus. He said, "Just difficult to deal with. I got a lot on my plate."
The woman who organized the Team Marcus benefit admitted there is missing money, but says it was lost on accident. She said she intends to pay it back, and she is cooperating with the investigation.
