Woman sentenced for theft of government funds charges

MT. VERNON, Ill. - She admitted to stealing from the government.  Now, she knows her punishment.

A grand jury indicted 51-year-old Mary Barnett-Johnson in December of 2012 on theft of government funds charges.

In February of 2013, she admitted to fraudulently receiving her deceased mother's social security benefits between August of 2003 and September 2011.  The total amount:  $85,353.

On Friday, a judge sentenced Barnett-Johnson to five years of probation.  She must also pay $85,353 in restitution.
