Southern Illinois standoff continues into second day
JOHNSON COUNTY, Ill—Police and sheriff's deputies have entered a second day of negotiations with an armed man inside a home who is refusing to come out.
Johnson County, Illinois sheriff's deputies confirm an armed man has been engaged in a stand off with police in the rural countryside of Vienna for more than 24 hours.
Illinois State Police confirmed the incident started as a domestic dispute.
They responded to Old Cypress Road around 1:00 Saturday afternoon. Illinois state police joined Johnson County sheriff's deputies to help actively negotiate with the suspect.
State police believe there are multiple people inside the home, but they believe only one is armed.
Illinois State Police officer Brad Lacey said the nearest neighbor lives about 150 yards away and has been evacuated.
Police said no one has been hurt and they are thankful the incident happened in a rural area, rather than in a busy town.
The street between Jenkins Road and Wildcat Bluff Road remains closed.
