Columbus replica ships visiting Kentucky

GRAND RIVERS, Ky. - Replicas of the Nina and Pinta ships made their way to Grand Rivers, Kentucky.

The Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools.

It is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.

The Pinta was built in Brazil and is larger than the original.

The captain of the Nina says it's amazing to feel and see the ships with your own eyes.

"People can describe what it's like, but to be on board, especially for the kids and to actually feel and see with their own eyes, what these ships look like. What tremendous feat it was to go across the ocean to the unknown with ships these size," Captain Stephen Sanger said.

The Santa Maria couldn't make the trip because the water wasn't deep enough for the even larger ship. Tours start Thursday, August 29 and will last until September 8.
