Eggners Ferry bridge contract awarded
MARSHALL COUNTY, KY - Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear awarded the Eggners Ferry Bridge project to the lowest bidder, Johnson Brother's Corporation out of Texas.
The new bridge will have four lanes, a shoulder on each side and a pedestrian and bike path.
"I can't wait to see it," smiles Anita Oates. "We've all been talking about it for so long."
Anita works at the Aurora General Store. The traffic has slowed, partly due to the winter weather but also because she says some folks are afraid to drive over the old bridge. The announcement of the new bridge was music to Anita's ears.
"It'll help all the business along here, it'll be good for everybody. We have food ready and waiting for the construction workers," says Anita.
"On a project of this size it takes some pretty specialized and very large equipment so it'll take them some time to move some equipment and get people on site to order some straw," says Kentucky Transportation Cabinet spokesperson, Keith Todd.
They aim to have traffic traveling over the new bridge by late 2015. Construction is set to begin in March.
