Kentucky jobless rate up to 8.5 percent in July
FRANKFORT, Ky. - Kentucky's unemployment rate ticked up slightly in July, rising to 8.5 percent from June's rate of 8.4 percent.
The rate is also slightly up from 8.4 percent in July 2012.
Kentucky's labor force declined by nearly 8.800 people in July, with employment dropping by 10,708 and unemployment rising by 1,909.
The biggest job gains were in transportation and utilities with 2,600 added jobs, construction with 2,500 jobs and education/health with 2,300. The biggest losses were in government with 1,600 fewer jobs and professional/business services with a decrease of 900 jobs.
The official national unemployment rate for July was 7.4 percent, more than one percentage point lower than Kentucky's rate.
