PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky Sen. Bob Leeper of Paducah says he has decided not to seek re-election.

Leeper told WKYX-AM that he will retire next year with 23 years of service as a senator.

The radio reports Leeper, who is an Independent, made the surprise announcement when asked how the Affordable Care Act would impact next year's re-election campaigns. He responded by saying it wouldn't affect his "because I'm not running for re-election."

Leeper, who chairs the Senate budget committee,  said he wants to spend more time with his family and decided it was time to give someone else the opportunity to serve.

Leeper has served in the Senate since 1991. His district includes McCracken, Marshall and Ballard counties.
