Local neighborhood on guard after overnight shooting
SALINE COUNTY, Ky—An overnight bar shooting leaves a local neighborhood on their guard. While the owner plans to beef up her security plan, people who live in the area say they are in shock that something like this could happen so close to home. Police are still searching for a suspect who they say shot a man in the elbow from behind a fence across the parking lot. It happened early Friday morning in the 400 block of East Raymond Street in Saline County, Illinois. The bar E.L. Shagwells is situated in the middle of the Harrisburg community.
Marsha Byas has owned E.L. Shagwells for four years now and says this bar has never had a problem like this. "This is not that bar. This doesn't happen here. Lots of people in the community say lets go somewhere safe, Shagwells is the place to go," said Byas.
But overnight, Shagwells turned into a crime scene. A shooting left a man injured and bullet holes in the building. Byas said, "They heard two shots go off first and then there was a pause and then two more shots go off."
Byas says it was completely unexpected. "There was no arguments, there was no fight, there was no loud talking, there was nothing going on," said Byas.
From what Byas understands, the victim was walking towards the entrance of Shagwells when he was shot in the elbow. Alphonso Taylor has never had a problem with the bar next door. He said he is surprised to hear about a shooting so close to home, but it does not come as a total shock. "When you come to a club, it's always going to be someone that wants to try to start something with somebody, no matter where the club is," said Taylor.
Byas plans to invest in outdoor security cameras. She said, "I'm not going to walk around in fear because of one incident and I'm not going to close down because of one incident."
Byas said keeping the bar and the neighborhood safe is her main concern. "It's not just about a business to me, I am a part of this community," said Byas.
She said things happen, everywhere you go. Even in a small town like Harrisburg. The victim was taken to an area hospital and later transferred to a trauma hospital. A suspect has not been identified and the Harrisburg Police Department says the motive is unclear. The victim's name is not being released at this time and the investigation is ongoing.
