LOUISVILLE, Ky.— The Louisville Zoo is seeking to allow patrons to enjoy a beer while looking at the bongos, baboons and other creatures.

Zoo officials hope to start selling brews to reduce their reliance on funding from the Metro government.

Zoo spokeswoman Kyle Shepherd told The Courier-Journal (http://cjky.it/17ybP7Q ) beer would probably only be sold at concession areas and hard liquor only at special functions.

Service Systems Associates Inc. replaces Sodexo as the zoo concessionaire in the next couple weeks under a deal that gives the zoo 20 percent of concession sales, up from 12 percent under Sodexo.

Mayor Greg Fischer's spokesman, Chris Poynter, says the administration supports the plan to sell beer.
