Rapid response event to help laid-off PGDP workers
PADUCAH, Ky. - Today marks a day for new beginnings for workers laid-off at the Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant. In an effort to help the laid-off workers, several groups are stepping up to try to help them find their next path in life.
There are three rapid response events scheduled this week to help workers learn more about educational and employment opportunities.
David Neaveill received his layoff letter on Wednesday. Neaveill said, "We were some of the first ones to go."
Amidst the bad news, he said he finds the speeches at the rapid response session comforting. "When you know that everybody eventually is going to be laid off, you start preparing for it. In all actuality, I think going Wednesday and being the first group out there, we're also the first group to get this information," said Neaveill.
Information that Employment Regional Program Manager Gina Johnston said is vital.
"The first step is how do I get my benefits going, my unemployment claim filed. This information helps them know exactly where to go, what help is available to them and where to find it," said Johnston.
Neaveill said these sessions are helpful and he now has a plan. "At this age, going back to school is more scary than anything because let's face it, I'm not a spring chicken anymore. But, going back to school will be a good thing, it will," said Neaveill.
Neaveill said he believes this could be his new beginning. "I believe God's got a plan for all of us and this is mine," said Neaveill.
Neaveill was one of many who said they will continue to take advantage of these rapid response meetings. The third rapid response session is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. The event is located at Julian Carroll Convention Center on Park Street.
