Senator Rand Paul discusses industrial hemp

"I'm a big supporter of it!"

Those words Tuesday from Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky about legalizing hemp.

Local 6's Todd Faulkner spoke with the senator.  The discussion covered a wide range of issues, including what he's doing to make it legal in Kentucky to grow hemp.

"I think it'd be a new cash crop for Kentucky farmers.  Hemp can be grown on some areas of property that's not very arable.  It can also be used to be put into the dash board of cars.  We have a good car industry in Kentucky that could support this.  I am lobbying to get it included and legalized in the Ag bill this  year," Senator Paul said.

Tuesday's comments come about a week after a trio of Kentuckians who favor the legalization of hemp traveled to Washington D.C. to meet with lawmakers and executive branch leaders.
