Smiling green pepper for sale to save dog's life
MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky—Puppies and peppers do not usually have have much in common, but two local friends are using the pair in a way that is making people smile. The interesting thing about the green pepper is, it smiles right back. The woman who owns it, is putting it up for sale on eBay - a move that could save a puppy's life.
Allison Pritchard rescued her two-year-old pointer mix, Ru, back in February. Pritchard said, "I had to have him and I went to meet him and he laid his head right in my lap and that was it."
Pritchard said Ru and her have a close connection. "He sleeps every night with his face on my face. He's my buddy. He goes everywhere with me."
When Pritchard took Ru home for the first time, she had no idea he had a severe heart condition and is in desperate need of major heart surgery. Pritchard said, "At first they thought he had a hole in his heart, but then we went to St. Louis and they said it was Pulmonic Stenosis."
Ru's surgery would generally cost around $10,000, but a surgeon in St. Louis offered to do the surgery for $3,000.
That is where the jolly green pepper comes in. Lisa Summers grew the green pepper and is selling it to raise money for Ru. Summers grew the pepper in her garden in Paducah and said, "We picked this from our garden last Monday. My husband was picking the green beans and I was picking peppers and I brought them in and set them down in the kitchen and I looked at it and thought that's kind of cool."
Summers said, "This makes people smile, if there was a dollar for every smile. Ru would have had more than enough to have his surgery...The pepper has a shelf life, he's starting to get wrinkled up a little, but Ru is not going to last very much longer without the surgery."
A little donation could be life-changing. Pritchard said, "It'd mean we could have a long, happy life together. I mean he had a really rough start to life and he deserves a great life.
Due to the severity of Ru's heart condition, he has a 35 percent chance of suddenly dying if he over-exerts himself. Ru's owner says they're just $500 shy of being able to schedule the heart surgery.
