Mom gets 2nd D.U.I. with children in car
MARSHALL COUNTY, KY- A crumpled piece of a silver bumper marks the scene of a crash along the 4000 block of Moors Camp Highway.
Hours earlier, shortly after 7 p.m. on Sunday evening, Deputy Eddie McGuire had pulled up to a terrifying scene - a mangled mini van with four children inside.
"(There were) some scratches, they were lucky," he said of the children's injuries.
But Haley Schroader, 26, was not. She admitted she had been on the lake, drinking and was later arrested for D.U.I.
Neighbor Jay Wallace was an eyewitness. He says he was on his way to the lake when he saw the mini van veer off the road and end up in a grassy embankment. He says he remembers two things- a woman being behind the wheel and children crying.
Investigators say Schroader admitted to driving but later changed her story at the hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. She also admitted, this was the second time she had gotten a D.U.I. with her children.
A police report shows she had her 9-week-old daughter with her when she was first arrested for the same back in 2008. Now, she is charged with D.U.I. second offense and 4 counts of wanton endangerment, one for each child in the van.
Deputy McGuire hopes, for the children, she will learn her lesson, "(This is) strike 2. So, you hope there wouldn't be a strike 3 in this case."
Schroader's husband, Blake was also in the car at the time of Sunday's wreck. Investigators say he is on probation. Eyewitnesses say he dropped his 9-year-old son off with a bystander and took off into the woods. On Monday he was located. He is now facing endangering the welfare of a child charges.
Schroader's 3 children, ages 6,7, and 8 are in the care of their father. Her stepson, meanwhile, is with his mother.
She is due back in court September 5th.
