Safer schools? There's an app for that!

PADUCAH, Ky.---The 'no phone zone' era in many schools is behind us and one district is taking it a step further.

Paducah Tilghman High School Adminstrators are encouraging students to use their phones as they debut an 'app' intended to keep kids safe.

Parents pay attention because administrators say this is the future.
Students can input information along with a picture.
If you see bullying, this is a way to document it, send it to administration, and if you like, remain completely anonymous.

Five fast minutes to get from one class to another.

You might not think anyone would have time to pick on someone in these halls, but Paducah Tilghman Snior Heather Redd knows better.

"Kids do still get bullied today," Redd said.

Whether it's apathy, fear, or something else stopping students from reporting their peers, Redd thinks the app could help stop the culture of silence.

"I feel like if they can take a picture and send it and nobody will know,  I feel like it'll be easier," Redd said.

Jake Humphrey just downloaded the app, and likes the ability to covertly capture bullies in the act, and report it in an instant.

"Teachers aren't around all the time, you can just take a quick little picture then it's like 'well obviously you did it.,'" Humphrey said.

At a cost of two grand a year, it's cheaper than the cameras in the corners and Troy Brock with Paducah Public Schools said it might be more effective, too.

"We're not going to be able to see every corner of every hallway of the building to be able to address every issue," Brock said.

In an ultimate role reversal, teachers are learning something students have said all along. Cell phones in school may not be such a bad thing after all.

Right now Paducah Tilghman only allows students to use their phones during lunch and in classes where they're specifically used for educational purposes.

There are many other things on the app, some stuff for parents too. You can find it in the Google Play Store and the App store by searching 'Paducah Public Schools'.
