UPDATE: 10/23/09 5:13PM
UNION COUNTY, IL - Crime scene tape surrounds a rural home. Investigators say they are working a suspicious death, but have few details right now. Neighbors say they first saw police cars arrive late Thursday night. They've been back to the home several times since.
The attorney for the man who lives at the home confirms that it is his client who is dead. Gerald Dziczkowski, 57 of rural Dongola, Ill., had been on the radar of federal investigators for several months before his death. Attorney H. Wesley Wilkins says federal weapons charges were expected soon. Wilkins says he has heard from investigators that his client's death may be a homicide.
Neighbors say they're not all that surprised about what happened next door. Shirley Gibson lives just a couple doors down from the house where Dziczkowski was found dead Thursday night.
"We just knew that something was going on," Gibson says. "I had no idea what."
Gibson and her husband paul first moved to the area about five miles west of Dongola 34 years ago. Gibson says Dziczkowski moved in about five years ago, originally from the Chicago area. She says he never really fit in with his neighbors.
"He was a distant person; he wasn't very well liked around the neighborhood," Gibson says.
Gibson says car traffic spiked right after Dziczkowski moved to the area. Investigators have returned to the home at 250 Kimber Rd. several times since discovering Dziczkowski's body. Local 6 cameras recorded as they carried several large brown paper bags and boxes out.
Paul Gibson is surprised that this happened so close to home.
"We just hate that it happened in our little, quiet community," he says. "We never ever dreamed of anything like this really."
Attorney H. Wesley Wilkins says he was appointed by the court to represent Dziczkowski in a 2007 battery case and a couple other cases in Union County. Wilkins says none of Dziczkowski's cases appeared to involve anyone who was seeking revenge against his client.
The Union County Coroner is expected to perform an autopsy on Dziczkowski's body Friday afternoon. The Union County Sheriff says he is not releasing any further details at this time.
