Arrest Made In Year-Old Murder Case

Lauren Adams

MAYFIELD, KY-  Last October investigators promised they were close to a break in the murder case of Delilah Blair.

Blair, 49, was found strangled October 4, 2008 inside her East South Street apartment.  Calls poured in, suspects were named, but that break never came for Mayfield Police.

It was Detective Mark Green's first homicide and he promised himself, "I will not let it become a cold case."

Each week, Green checked in with Kenneth Simmons, Blair's brother.

"The hardest thing was calling and telling him I still didn't have anything," he remembered.

Instead of the days getting easier, they got harder. Simmons drove by the scene of the crime several times a week.

"You ride through where it happened, you see people, you're not sure if he the one, they the one," he said, of being haunted by his sister's murder.

After the year anniversary passed,  Green took additional evidence to a crime lab in Frankfort.  And at long last DNA evidence, he says, solved the case, "That was the break I'd been looking for."

While investigators declined to go into detail about the evidence they will say it is enough to connect Tony Green, 45, to the crime.  Green had long been a suspect and had admitted to being at Blair's home with three others the night of her death.  Investigators called the pair 'acquaintances' but said the motive for murder is still unclear.

"He hugged my neck, it even brought a tear to my eye, it was something," Detective Green said of sharing the news with Simmons Friday evening.

"It just made me feel so good, it really did," Simmons said, his voice choked with emotion.

Now, he says, he and his family can begin the act of healing and moving forward, "She's gone but she won't ever be forgotten."

Tony Green remains in the Graves County Jail serving a five year sentence for wanton endangerment charges.  He was arrested three weeks after the murder after leading police on a chase through three counties.

I agree that Mayfield has a history of "pinning" crimes on innocent parties. There is alot of cover up and double dealing within the Graves Co. judicial system and its local "government". Just as there is in our US Government. There is plenty of "good ole boy" philosophy going on in this country and its sad that some murders are pinned on people and over looked by officials b/c a few cops and city officials were actually involved too. Don't call 911 in Mayfield, call Pocket's;that's faster!

Oh yeah Mayfield & Graves has wonderful police. Huge turn over! They are not much better than rent a cops or mall police! I think that maybe over the past 20 years we MIGHT have had a hand full of good officers! Oh and I have never been in trouble or been arrested by the law of our lovely county; lived here all my life and know Mayfield has as much or more corruption as large cities such as Cleveland or Louisville.

WELL IF THERE WERE SUPPOSE TO BE THREE OR FOUR PEOPLE IN THE HOUSE WHERE ARE THE OTHER PEOPLE THAT WERE THERE, IF HIS DNA WAS THERE SO WERE OTHER PEOPLE WHY STOP AT ONE WHEN YOU CAN HAVE THREE OR FOUR JUDGE NOT!PUT OTHERS IN YOUR SIGHT DON'T JUST LOSE SIGHT AND GO BLIND ON ONE PERSON. TRYING TO SOLE A CASE TO MAKE YOURSELF LOOK GOOD.

the police in graves county work just as hard as any other police. the crime lab is NOT GOING TO ATTEMPT TO MATCH DNA ON A VANDALISM. before you are so quick to run them down why dont you attend a citizens police class to learn what real police work is

Well I hope to GOD that Mayfield has the right murderer in this case, because they tend to arrest the wrong people for murders and then innocent people end up in prison!

Tony Green was the only person I had in my sight. He was the only who wasn't from Mayfield who didn't know Delilah well. Everyone else knew her like a sister. Very sweet lady. ^5 to Det. Green. It's nice to know that we do have some top notch people on the force in Mayfield! Well Done!

This is a good end to this story! Lacey in your case that is why we need to continue the fight to bear arms so we can protect ourselves and our propery. We also need to instill laws that protect us from unjust judicial punishment when doing so.

It's really nice to hear that an Officer Green has taken the initiative to solve this case; by taking the DNA to crime lab..If Mayfiled/Graves county did this more often the crime rate, and vandalism's rate would decrease...Two years ago i had two vehicles broke into and they wouldnt run the Finger prints that were very obvious on the cars...if these things were done more often these Criminals could pay for thier Debts..and Crimes..and more importantly people in this area could feel safe atlast!
