People line up for H1N1 vaccines as frustration grows

The government says the vaccine is safe

WASHINGTON - Lines are growing to get the H1N1 vaccine, as well as frustration.

"There is no organization at all," said father Fred Powers.

"The line has not moved, and they have pregnant women in the heat," said Mary Anguiano, an expectant mother.

There is good news from the government today on the effectiveness of the vaccine people have been waiting awaiting.

"The data show that nearly all the pregnant women who received a single 15 microgram dose had a robust immune response," explains Anthony Fauci, M.D., National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Clinical trials of the swine flu vaccine show one dose appears to protect most pregnant women who get the shot, but a second dose remains necessary for children under 10.

"There was a sharp increase in the immune response to the vaccine after they received a second dose," continued Fauci.

Since April, 114 children have died from the virus, leading parents to wait hours and hours to get vaccine for their kids.

"I wanna make sure they're healthy throughout the season. Especially with them being in daycare that they have it," said Kasey Lanning, mother of twins.

More doses are coming. So far some 30 million have been allocated. This week, another 10 million will be available. Today independent health observers began monitoring the safety of the swine flu vaccine.  Observers are watching for possible side effects, as the number of doses being given continues to grow.

Locally,  the Southern Seven Health Department will offer the vaccine starting November 9th to people most at risk, but health officials ask that you call your local office for an appointment because of the limited supply.

There are plans for walk in clinics once more vaccine becomes available. Again, the current supply is meant for pregnant women, children, those who work in hospitals and schools, and people with medical conditions that could be compromised if they got the flu.

Did I read that right, TODAY they started monitoring for the safety? Does that put people in the same class as guinea pigs?
