Rape Suspect Pleads 'Not Guilty'

WEAKLEY COUNTY, TN  -  'Not guilty,'  that's the plea entered by Bruce Tuck's lawyer in court this morning. Tuck is the accused 'Martin Rapist'- facing 22 counts for at least three rapes in the area.

This is the second time this week Tuck has appeared in court. The Grand Jury indicted him on Monday. The Grand Jury normally would not be in session until January,  but District Attorney Tommy Thomas said it was important for the sake of the victims to move this case along as quickly as possible.

Just minutes after arriving in court, Tuck's lawyer, public defender Colin Johnson entered the not guilty plea for his client.

Tuck said little, answering the judge with 'yes sir' and 'no sir.' He admitted his car had been repossessed and his bank account wiped out.

Also in court Thursday, Johnson said his client would be undergoing a psychiatric evaluation. The prosecution wasn't surprised by that request, saying it is standard.

"It's pretty routine in a case of this magnitude, he's facing pretty stiff charges and it's an issue that could be brought up later by the defense. So it's routine to have him evaluated by the state mental health authorities," said District Attorney, Tommy Thomas.

Thomas added the evaluation would focus on two questions: Is Tuck competent to stand trial and was he insane at the time of the offenses.

Immediately following court Thursday morning Tuck was taken by Weakley County Sheriff's Deputies to Middle Tennessee for that evaluation. It is expected to last around thirty days.  He will return to Court January 7th.

Tuck's family, along with several of the victims were in Court Thursday. All declined to comment.
