Neighborhood Looking For Culprit Of Pet Poisonings

By WPSD Staff

After nine dogs have died in one local neighborhood, Ballard County animal control is looking for the person responsible. Since May 2008, at least 12 dogs have been poisoned, with the latest report coming this past Friday.

While the owner of the latest reported poisoning case didn't wish to talk to Local 6, Lauren Adams talked to other members of the neighborhood who want justice for their dogs who used to just be pets, but now are looking more like targets. Watch the video to view Lauren's report from Ballard County.

I've had a dog poisoned and it's heart breaking. Hopefully these cruel people will be brought to justice. Unfortunately they probably enjoy the news coverage of those affected by such a tragic loss of their beloved pets. We as pet owners need to make sure we are responsible pet "parents." We need to make sure our pets aren't trespassing on other's properties or outside barking-doing anything that might annoy our neighbors. Let's not give anyone an excuse to try & justify harming any animal.

We've had 3 pets, in our neighborhood, 2 cats and 1 dog, that fell victim to antifreeze poisoning. They all either died at home, or were humanely euthanized, within days of each other. We are all families with children who adore our pets, and have all been forced to suffer through, not only the grief, but hundreds of dollars in vet bills. It is so tragic that our children have been made aware that this level of cruelty can reach right into the 1 place that they should feel safe.

"Certain People" use a middle man (local shady businessman) to get landowners to lease there land thru him for hunting. Then dogs near the hunting land that are loose or just bark too much are poisened usually with a pesticide called carbofuran.

If this person doesn't like dogs then they should move out of the area and find a place with out animals. Its not fair for the people to lose their animals or part of their families by the hand of a neighbor or a stranger and when they are caught they should spend time in jail for the crime they are committing

We have a rash of cat poisonings going on in Vienna IL right now. The toxicology report pins it down to a pesticide only used in agriculture. We are all concerned, as it could also be toxic to humans and other pets, and could easily get into the water table.

Don't have info, just a theory/profile. My opinion is poisoning is a passive-aggressive activity done more by females, the physically weak or immature, likely had access to the animals so the animals knew them & their scent prior to poisoning, maybe delivery person or outdoor worker. Motives might be they do not feel accepted, they feel they don't get enough attention, or they blame animals for something.

We had that happen on our neighborhhood. It went on one winter then stopped and then started up again. We pinpointed the chemical used and had a pretty good idea of who was responsible but you about have to have cameras and catch them in the act. We did put up cameras and sort of spread the word we had them. It did stop. But it is sick and senseless and the person(s) responsible should be made to endure the same suffering they are inflicing on our pets.

Anyone who would kill a dog, would hurt a child or an adult. They have no compassion and should be dealt with severely. Dogs and cats with homes, or without, deserve better. Those guilty should come forward and take their punishment.

I can't believe some people can be so cruel to animals. I don't think GOD gave us these animals for us to be mean to. I think he would want us to take care of them like most people do for their pets. Some people look at them as part of their family that love very much.

It takes a HUGE COWARD to do something that cruel and pathetic. Animals cannot defend themselves against something like that and it takes someone horrible to do something like that to a poor animal.
