Local Community Works Together To Stop The Violence

By Gerran Thomas

Cairo, IL-As the investigation continues into an arson and deadly shooting in Cairo, Illinois, the community is banding together to stop the violence. On Monday, Illinois State Police say 29 year old Beatrice Barber of Cairo and 27 year old Eva Hill of Charleston, Missouri were found shot to death inside a burned home in the 600 block of 37th Street in Cairo. Police say the fire was intentionally set.

The City of Cairo held a Stop The Violence Summit Thursday. The program was scheduled before the shootings happened, but the event took on deeper meaning in light of the recent events. The summit featured skits, poems and words of reflection from kids and community leaders. The Delta Center and Teen Reach sponsored the event to raise awareness about violence prevention. The group promotes academics and parental involvement. Mayor Judson Childs hopes events like the summit are what his community needs to bring about positive change.

"There are negative things in any city you go to. We should concentrate on the positive, or, if we are going to think about the negative, we should think about ways of changing this thing here," said Childs.

The mayor issued a proclamation to make November 19th Stop The Violence Summit Day in Cairo. Organizers hope to make the summit an annual event in town.

Look for at least three other locations in midwest cities of similar poulations, that have had identical problms in the past but found ways to overcome them. Cairo is not alone with this problem. Do the research and seek guidance from them. I have read about such places numerous times. If I can find them so can the local community leaders.

Even in boom times when there were plenty of jobs and growth in the area, all it ever seemed to do was create more demand for drugs, more money changing hands, and a more target-rich environment for the low-lifes. You're going to have to actually bust up some big organization, run off whole families and even demolish entire neighborhoods to clean that place up any
