PADUCAH - To make money, you often have to spend money and Paducah city leaders did a lot of that Tuesday night. The biggest purchase was the Executive Inn. The city voted to pay $1.8 million dollars to buy the hotel. The Convention Center Corporation Board paved the way for the purchase with a special called meeting Tuesday afternoon to transfer the properly to the city. Besides the hotel, city commissioners paved the way for more big ticket items to help attract and keep tourism dollars in our region.
After months of negotiations back and forth, a final decision came down to one moment. "Madam Clerk, can we call the roll?" asked Mayor Bill Paxton. One by one, Paducah City Commissioners unanimously agreed and with that vote, the city of Paducah will buy the Executive Inn from it's mortgage holder, Logan Asset Backed Fund for $1.8 million dollars. In addition to the cost of purchasing the hotel, the city estimates it will spend another $1.8 million for demolition, liens and other expenses. Mayor Paxton says the city already has plans in place to cover the costs.
"It's going to be involved in the investment fund that the city has with 1/2 percent payroll tax and float a bond to pay out the investment fund," explained Mayor Paxton.
City leaders also agreed to acquire the land the Big E sits on from the Convention Center Corporation. Those were the first of other big decisions city leaders made at Tuesday's commission meeting. They also agreed to purchase 165 acres of land on Sheehan Bridge Road near Exit 11 for a sports park. While the total cost is about $900,000 dollars, city leaders are confident private fundraisers will cover most of that cost.
"With private funding for purchase the city won't be out a penny," said Commissioner Gerald Watkins.
That's because city leaders plan to rely on private fund raising within the next year to buy the land and then develop the property with sports fields little by little after that. The city also plans to purchase a 40,000 square foot air dome pavilion to house vendors for the 2010 AQS Quilt Show and Contest. After the Quilt show, the pavilion could be used for an indoor sporting venue. The pavilion comes at at a cost of about a little more than $ 800,000 dollars. It may sound like a lot of money, but it's not money the city can't get back.
The pavilion's company Arizon Structures says it is willing to buy back the structure in a few years at 80 percent of the purchase cost. In the end, several big decisions that promise to help bring money to our region in the long run.
Meredith Schroeder also announced the AQS Quilt Show will stay in Paducah for the next five years. Mayor Paxton says the City has had plans in place to cover expenses for these agreements. City Manager Jim Zumwalt will discuss those plans in detail at the beginning of next year.

Do you realize how much $$ the quilt show brings in to Paducah? Some of you might want to do a bit of homework before blaming your leaders who are trying to keep the quilt show, and the income it generates, in your town.

Paxton is the best mayor Paducah has ever had - he's getting things done. If anyone really cared, they would show up for a city council meeting or run for an office, rather than just post nasty comments on a blog. The number of commissioners usually outweighs the number of citizens in the chambers on Tuesday night, so how can you even argue?

The only reason this commission has been allowed to continue to make stupid decisions on behalf of the citizens of Paducah, no one shows up to the meetings to protest or question. If you watch the meetings from home, no one is there! I can bet if more people were to show up, they may think twice before making those idiotic decisions!!

Mayor Paxton cares about 2 things,1)His bottom line,2)Control. He owns and controls the media. He doesnt give a rats behind about the people who work for him. He is corrupt from head to toe, and this abuse of power and taxpayer money proves it. He uses the media to further his own agendas, political and financial. Im embarrased to even say i live near Quilt City or whatever they call it. How lame is that. Get Paxton and his cronies out before he takes this entire region down with him.

I'm sure Paxton and his little buddy Dimwit..I mean Zumwalt have come up with some kind of idiotic plan the spineless commission will rubber stamp. If the county buys in to any of these half-baked ideas they can all kiss their seats on the fiscal court bye! This is proff of why we need a county government. County people want nothing to do with the idiots running city hall. Keep em inside the city limits please!!!

No offense to the quilters that visit us every year, we love to have your business. The problem is that you're all only here for one week to boost our economy. That's one week out of 52 and while it's all well and good while you're here, those of us that live in this city and pay taxes to live and work here have to live with the consequences of our city's poor financial decisions for the OTHER fifty-one weeks of the year.

Congratulations to the city & commissioners for making the hard decision to put the Big E out of our misery. Thanks to Jim Zumwalt and his foresight to have the financial plan in place to make this important purchase to take back our convention & meeting facility without having to raise any taxes. As for the quilt show, I want to thank the Schroeders for their continued support of Paducah and willingness to commit staying in Paducah for 5 years.

I still find it funny that the news media won't call Paxton out on his lies... how is it that earlier this very year 15 city employees were laid off and the other city employees didn't get Cost of Living raises because the city "didn't have the money." Paxton and Zummy want to stop paying the share of pauper burials ($20,000) that the city has paid for years, because they "don't have the money." But the city has $6 million sitting around to spend on bad real-estate deals? What's up with that?
33800909Wednesday, Dec 16 at 4:23 PM Anonymous wrote ...
Awesome job by the commissioners and Hizzoner, as usual, of course, half the problem is Zummy, but his position isn't elected, so we won't be rid of him until Paducah gets to the polls for once and VOTES PAXTON OUT OF OFFICE! Paducah residents CANNOT afford to keep silent anymore, stop letting the Paxton-backing, rich, west-enders put this guy back in office. Get out there and get your voices heard, stop letting this city government waste our hard earned money on frivolous projects!

Way to go Paxton spend those tax dollars and continue to push Paducah's population even further down. A soccer complex are we expecting and invasion of immigrants to the area to play?Arizon to buy back a tent @ 80% I see that. I guess Bhupinder ownes that company too.If this city will ever get tourism up it needs to do something with the river area and not build another hotel in the flood stage area or a sports complex in a flooded area either.

How can city officials justify all of the money they are spending like the hotel, a glorified tent, and the soccer field when they told the city employees that there just wasn't enought money to let them have a raise this past year? Meanshile, they are spending more than ever.
