Like everyone else I would like to know about school closings for Benton Ky. Also I am a non traditional student at MSU and have to drive to Murray. its hard to make plains for everyones day. Is it a snow day for us ?
37252862Ethan Fife - WPSD Web Editor said on Monday, Feb 1 at 9:11 PM
@Tena - Snowman 6 updates within around 2 minutes of being entered into the system. If you don't see the school/business/church listed, then that means no official has told us they were out. Assume school in Crittenden Co. is in session tomorrow, but check back for updates since we might receive the closing later in the evening or early in the morning.
36807429Tena said on Monday, Feb 1 at 8:54 PM
I wish the Snowman 6 closing would be updated as frequently as possible. I missed the news, so I called others to see if Crittenden was closed or delayed. But it isn't listed yet. Does anyone know?

Obion Co. high school children live way out even in Kentucky and they are letting the children go to school because if the children live on private or small roads so snow plows do not go through the areas. union school children can go beacause they all live in union city thus they go why does this happen?

The length of KY school year is insane compared to the rest of the state, including their grading school. Whatever is on the school calendar of when school is let out for the summer is the day my kids are done with the year. We have vacations planned and paid for well in advance because they only get 2 months off compared to 3 for the rest of the nation. If the board wants to reimburse my vacation costs, then my kids will stay in school extra. Knock out the BS MLK holidays to make up school days
36790847GC Mom said on Monday, Feb 1 at 3:03 PM
I really wish Graves County would let the parents know the night before if they are going to close school. Do they not understand how hard it is to get someone to take care of your kids at last minute or at 6:00 in the morning. Please take this in consideration when posting closings.
36777007FedUp said on Monday, Feb 1 at 12:00 PM
The decision of whether or not to cancel classes is one thing, but the coy arrogance with which these decisions are handled is inexcusable. County schools in west KY are notorious for throwing in the towel over minor weather situations, so it's not at all unreasonable to expect that the schools notify the media with an "open, buses running where possible" decision rather than leave everyone in the dark on whether or not they need to make arrangements for their kids.
36764879Anonymous said on Monday, Feb 1 at 11:10 AM
I don't think the McCracken county school board drove down all back roads. Most roads are clear, but some are still a sheet of packed down snow and ice. Owell as long as everyone made it to school safe. Glad I don't drive a bus and glad my kids don't ride on one.

Well my daughter goes to Graves Co and the bus driver called me this morning to tell she was going to be late because she had gotten the bus stuck. So I had to rearrange my schedule this morning and get my husband to leave his job to take my daughter to school because she was not going to have a way to school this morning unless someone took her. It would not have hurt to have them start a little later so the bus drivers could see the roads better.
36758439tj said on Monday, Feb 1 at 9:55 AM
Some of u are pathetic. I come from Ohio which is not the snow capital of the world, but our roads have more snow on them than this ALL winter and we go to school. Yet one minor snowfall down here which is mostly melted on my country road and u guys think its a state of emergency and school should be canceled. Callowaymade the right decision by having school.
36757412Holly said on Monday, Feb 1 at 9:48 AM
School is in and I am happy!! The temp will be 40 degers today the snow will melt!! If you all get out to go eat, go to church etc.. Then the kids can go to school! McCracken Co parent!!
36757054Anonymous said on Monday, Feb 1 at 8:55 AM
GO CALLOWAY CO! The winter storm was not that bad! The winter storm was not that bad, we only got about 6in (which most of it is melting). I can understand a delay..but the students should be in school getting an education today there is no reason for the Calloway Co. school to be closed.

I live in Graves on a back road and it's fine. Of course the drivers are being cautious, and that's all you can do. I remember going to school with a lot more than this on the ground. As the daughter of a former Graves bus driver, I can say that they are more worried about your children's safety than about themselves and will do all they can. They can't miss school every time it snows, people. They have to make up these days when it's warm and pretty outside.
36752414Anon said on Monday, Feb 1 at 7:59 AM
I like Random's comment. I live in this area, but I do find it funny how little, in terms of winter weather, it takes to call off school. I bet in the northern- tier of the country, school won't get called off unless there is a bona fide blizzard.
36752262haha said on Monday, Feb 1 at 7:56 AM
random are you serious? please correct your grammar before you criticize others... thanks
36752174Dylan said on Monday, Feb 1 at 7:56 AM
Well good for Chicago but western Kentucky does not have the same utilities obviously that a snowy city like Chicago would have for dealing with snow and ice.
36752169Random said on Monday, Feb 1 at 7:40 AM
Wow, are you people serious about the school closing or are you the kids that are hoping school is called off. Look, this isn't bad. If you lived in the Chicago area you would still be going to school. This little bit of ice/black ice is nothing compaired to what some other kids in the country have to go through to get to school during winter. If you think this is bad you should move somewhere that actually has bad winters every year and where they need a constant 6 ft of snow on the ground.

Just got off the phone with the Calloway Co. Bus garage and Calloway is going to school today. However bus are only running were possible...not the most intelligent decision. Lots of bad roads in the southern part of the county. Bad form school board your going to get someone hurt.
36750774lil bit said on Monday, Feb 1 at 6:57 AM
If your school is not listed then you should expect school to be open. Our school has a one call if yours does not have it ask your school to get it, it is great. As for you who are being awful about bus drivers, you need to be thanking them. Most of them are very concerned about your children. And if you ever have put them on a bus then you either think the drivers are ok or you don't care much for your own children. Stop fussing and get ready for school.

if you know the roads are bad, then obviously you've been out on them. if you can go out to do some things then you can go to school. i'm sure a lot more goes in to deciding whether or not to close the schools then just looking at one or two roads.

i am another mccracken county student and from what i heard there are a lot of student drivers who will not be going because of safety. and there are a lot of parents who will not take their kids because of safety issues. and those parents who let there kids on the bus today are dumb. a lot of the bus drivers drive dangerously so add that to ice. im disappointed in mccracken . they should think about everybody's safety. and ask about back roads. which 90% of their students live on.
36750159Geoff Stone said on Monday, Feb 1 at 6:29 AM
The McCracken Co schools should be closed. The roads are not all cleared. If we have school half the students will not be there due to the roads. The road I am on is still iced over & I don't feel safe driving in these conditions.
36750152Parent said on Monday, Feb 1 at 6:19 AM
Marshall Co school officials should be terribly ashamed of themselves. The back roads are still very slick and most of the students ride the bus. At the very least school should open one hour late.
36750002Lester said on Monday, Feb 1 at 6:11 AM
Graves County should NOT be open today. Most of the county roads are frozen and slick. Our kids safety should come before the school worries about how much money they will not get if school is closed. I have just checked our road and it is slick as butter 2/3rd of the way through it.

i am a student at a mccracken Co. school and i do not feel safe on these roads especialy the back roads. The place where i am currently at has half the road iced over still.
36749834Sarah said on Monday, Feb 1 at 6:05 AM
Graves County should allow x number of snow days as we use to have. It is to be expected to miss a certain number of days so why act like there will not be any missed? Also, Parents who work need to know the night before so arrangements can be attempted prior to the morning hours. You can't find a baby sitter at 5:30:am. People will miss work if they call it off and if they go people will be worried sick about their kids on the ice that is there right now at 5:02am as I just checked.
36749802Helen said on Monday, Feb 1 at 5:44 AM
Graves County side roads are very slick and not worth the risk. I checked out two yesterday where children are picked up and water sitting on them will for sure be frozen over in the am. I am proud that classes were called off Friday as a safety measure. That was the right thing to do in an unpredictable situation as it was. Now we can clearly see what the situation is and again it should be called off. The main roads may be fine to travel but I live on a side road and know how they are.

36747449Anonymous said on Monday, Feb 1 at 2:31 AM
You really cant arrange ahead of time if you have no idea what's going on. and yes if you go to church or out for supper then you can take your kids to school. But also think about this, when they went out TODAY roads were wet not icy. When it was 34 degrees outside now it is 17. water freezes at 32. but roads are crappy not anything news channel 6 can do. call Tim Heller he still makes the calls since 1921 seems like.
36747432Anonymous said on Monday, Feb 1 at 2:20 AM
I bet some of these people made it out on the roads today. It is a matter of what your priority is. If you can make it out for supper or church your kids can go to school. Don't put them on the bus that is your choice. And if you wait until the morning to arrange child care then you are an idiot
36747324Anonymous said on Monday, Feb 1 at 1:39 AM
The school systems should tell us in advance if we are not having school. Some of us have to leave early in the morning and do not have time to make arrangements for our children at the last minute.

Going to be an awful lot of very upset parents if McCracken County goes to school. My child attends CCA, and as I understand it, the decision for CCA is based from what McCracken County decides. This is a mistake, there are too many children from other counties to rely on just one school's decision. The roads are covered in ice from the snow melting and refreezing with the very low temperatures. Safety is a concern, the children should stay home.

I don't understand most of you people. Sure the counties have had all weekend to clear the roads and access the idea of if kids can make it to school. If you parents are griping about it where they can "find somewhere for the kids while you are at work"...if you can get to work, why not drop off your child? I live on a back road and not seen a plow or salt truck all weekend, BUT if you pull back those curtains, you might see MOST of it has melted already. Roads were great in Lone Oak at 6am!!!
36745342Anonymous said on Monday, Feb 1 at 12:27 AM
Livingston open bus running where possible, what's the deal what about the kids buses that wasn't able to get to them. If they miss school cause the bus wasn't able to get to them are they going to be counted absent and go against them?

This goes to: "angry mother wrote ... i live in heath and have two children in the mccracken county school district. The roads in heath are terrible. This is ridiculous!!!!!" I don't see the problem? If you lived inside the school district, you would have no prob getting your children to school. Was a stupid idea 7 years ago to change that policy of not having to be IN the school district to go there. Which is why Lone Oak is WAY overcrowded now.

Wow this is crazy....a little bit of snow and the entire state shuts down. Our family has moved here from the Chicago area. School districts in this area should implement some new standards for winter weather. How about changing bus routes during these times to a designated bus stop for all students within a certain radius.

Not Mccracken county? The main roads are clear sure but the back ones aren't. A ton of students live on the back roads. That need buses to get to school.

This is absurd! I'm not from here and I was in two neighborhoods around Lone Oak and Paducah today. I almost did not get out of one of them. The other neighborhood was just as bad. Why does the school system here think that everybody lives in an area that is clear and the schools are accessible to them safely? Where I live, they cancel school the evening or night before the impending weather, but then again that school system has "Designated" weather days also.

graves county school system should take a look at all the back roads 90% of the students live on. even some of the main roads, especially sections of 45, are very icy. we should not have missed all day friday, half a day would have been more appropriate. but tomorrow, with the conditions of smaller, icy back roads, school board officials shouldn't take the chance.

Is it too much to ask for the McCracken County Ky.,school officials to tell us the night before our kids are scheduled to have school if it is in session or not? Many need to arrange supervision of their kids because of work. You people need to get your act together, and give everyone more than 1 hour notice in the morning. I would wager that you would not like being kept in the dark!!!!

Calloway backroads are ridiculous. Friday was completely pointless to be called off. Tomorrow, however, is a prime example of the one day it would be safe to call it off.

Dear "stephen", I think Graves should go to school if that is the grammar being taught. I know many of the teachers there and if they read this they would be ashamed! Please go!

it would be great to know for sure if mccracken is in or not. i think we should be out the back roads are still terrible. and those that are clear are wet which will turn into ice. and it does not make much sense we would be out friday with nothing on the ground but when the roads are actually bad, we would be in school.

I've been out and about on the roads today and everything looked clear on primary and secondary roads. There was roads in Forrest hills that was horrible!!!! They need to think about safety and not criticism about calling school off!!!!!!

I think McCracken County should be closed because if they can be out when there is no snow how come they can't get out with ice and black ice please let us know ahead of time not everyone can get out and the students will have a unexcused absent that not fair!!!

Marshall is somewhat clear, however the roads are still very wet. It will be icy on the back roads tomorrow, I suggest at least starting at 9:30 like Christian Fellowship.

36742899anonymous said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:53 PM
I bet all of these people complaining about schools not being closed tomorrow have been out running around the last two days on the icy roads

I hate it out here in Heath cause the roads are dry, metropolis is sort of wet though so I imagine well see some ice on it tomorrow. The back roads though are terribly dangerous.
36742752snow!!!! sucks!!!!! said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:48 PM
I'm in reidland out in mccracken. the snows not really to bad but alot has melted throughout the day and the roads are already icy i seriouslly wouldnt feel safe on a bus....atleast not that early when everything is still frozen.

Graves should be closed! My road is awful! i live on a back road and it is slick! Friday not a single snow flake and now we have 3-5ins and more on Monday and school that stupid.
36742662Alex said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:47 PM
Nah,I live off metrop lake which is the entrance to Heath and it's dry.Lone oak is fine also, not sure about reidland.
36742642Amy said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:41 PM
Graves needs to decide. I would like to know if I can sleep in or wake up at the break of dawn! The back roads are still slick and the buses could have a wreck from it. It would be safest to not have school in the mornin or go 2 hours late.

We need to know if Calloway County Schools are closed? The roads in the county are still very difficult to drive on. It will be difficult foe the buses to run on these roads in the morning. Please let us know asap so we can make appropriate arrangements for our children.
36742109Lars said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:31 PM
I think the superintendents should close most of the county schools because most of the back roads are horrible especially mccracken co. The road I live on has had no snow plow or salt put on it this is rediculous schools should be closed

calloway has done this since all my brithers and sisters went there! wake up callaway parents have to make arrangements and all the parents are calling me. start planning and stop making it hard on the poor working single parents we have to know things not at the last minute when parents are on the way out the door. times are hard enough missing work can hurt parents even more if we cant plan a day ahead.

If you don't see your school on the list, then plan on attending. However, be sure to check for an updated list throughout the evening and Monday morning.

I think mccracken co should be closed because there are hundreds of roads in mcracken and lots of them are still covered and have ice on them.

Is McCracken County Out?
36741749Dustin said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:23 PM
As a student I personally believe I have the right to know tonight, not anyother time of the day. I am worried that if they do not call us off tomorrow (Calloway) then an accident might happen. They do not watch those back-roads carefully and really they are just an accident waiting to happen. So it just may be a great idea for Calloway to be closed.
36741724jen said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:20 PM
These backroads in newconcord in calloway need to be cleared asap if their is school tommorrow.

Does Madisonville Community College, have school? I have to drive an hour to class in the a.m. so kinda wanted to know before I go
36741609Parent said on Sunday, Jan 31 at 10:18 PM
9:17 and Calloway still hasn't decided if they are open yet, but Murray City is calling it an hour late? We really need a way of knowing if they have decided to open or still haven't made a decision, it's hard to sit around waiting and it'd be great if the parents had a chance to make arrangements for our children.
