Local teen facing charges in father's death
OBION COUNTY, TN- Several days after a deadly shooting, bullet holes and a series of questions are all that remainon Wade Wiley Road.
"Vernon was a nice guy. I just don't know what happened," neighbor Teddy Potter said Monday.
Potter is talking about his friend and the victim, Vernon Putman.
"I heard the gunshots, you couldn't help but hear 'em," he said of the incident Thursday night, shortly after 11.
Potter dismissed the noise, so he certainly was not prepared for the phone call that came next.
"The neighbors called and said he got shot. I said, 'Good Lord!' It just surprised me," he continued.
Sheriff Jerry Vastbinder said, "It was an argument that escalated."
He says the argument began over the teenage boy's underage drinking. The Sheriff says Vernon Putman, 40, became enraged when religion was brought up.
"He tells his son to kneel down, held a rifle on him and told him he's gonna let him meet his God," Vastbinder recalled.
It didn't stop there. Putman then turned the gun on his wife, Polly. When the gun misfired, Putman went outside and fired 10 rounds into his son's car parked in the driveway. When he returned, his wife had locked herself in a back bedroom, and his son was there to meet him on the front steps.
"When his father came in he shot him two times, once in the head, and another one in the neck," Sheriff Vastbinder recalled.
"He was trying to protect him and his mother," Potter contends.
Now the teen is facing criminal charges- charges Potter doesn't agree with.
"They had a conflict and it just ended with a bad situation."
Because the case involves a juvenile District Attorney Tommy Thomas is remaining tight-lipped about the situation. He did confirm the suspect will be arraigned Thursday in Juvenile Court. Thomas says the proceedings will likely be closed.
