PADUCAH - One of the original members of the WPSD team passed away Wednesday at the age of 82.  When the station first started in 1957, Bob Swisher was the first to greet the audience with the words, "Ladies and gentlemen, welcome."

And the audience welcomed him into their homes for many years to follow.  Swisher headed the sports department at the station and anchored the sports report every night.  He later moved behind the scenes, serving as production manager for four years before his retirement in 1989.

In 1981, Swisher started the Sports Against Cancer program in honor of his father, who died of cancer.  The program hosts a series of events highlighted by the annual bowling tournament, which WPSD continues to air to this day.  Sports Against Cancer has raised over $500,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Swisher is survived by his wife Hilda.  College sweethearts, the couple would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this November.

A memorial service will be held at Paducah's First Presbyterian Church, 200 N. 7th Street, on Sunday, June 13 at 2 p.m.
