Free boat safety checks this weekend at resort park

LAKE BARKLEY, Ky. - Dickey Reece, Vessel Safety Officer for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, has an experienced crew of volunteers ready to assist him in providing all area boaters a free safety boat check at Lake Barkley State Park Marina this Saturday, July 3.

“We will be on hand commencing at 7 a.m. and will remain on site until all those boat owners wishing a thorough inspection of their boat is completed," Reece said.  "We inspect boats large and small, starting with small runabouts and jet skies to houseboats exceeding 90 feet. This activity takes less than 10 minutes, but assures the owner that their facility is ready to be safely taken on the lakes.”

Reece said every owner will be provided a 2010 U.S.C.G. Safety Inspection Seal and a copy of the completed report.

With the busy summer season now in full swing, David Nalley, commander of the Lake Barkley Flotilla, is anxious to increase the volunteer staff of this group.

“We need more assistance now than ever before to conduct our various activities for this community," Nalley said. "The U.S. Coast Guard headquartered in Paducah, Kentucky, depends on us to assist them in maintaining safety on our lakes, rivers and streams in this area. Our commitment to conducting safe boating courses, vessel examinations and patrolling the lakes is unending. Any adults, men and women, young or old are most welcome to learn and understand our mission. Hours of involvement is dependent on the individual’s work schedule. We welcome everyone to consider joining this worthwhile organization.
