Paul and Conway weigh in on financial reformFULTON, Ky. - The new financial reform law is an issue that's got people talking, especially those running for political office. In our region, those people are Democrat Jack Conway and Republican Rand Paul, the two men vying to fill the open senate seat in Kentucky. Paul said he's adamantly opposed to the law, the government hasn't learned anything from the past few years and this new law will get us into even worse financial shape than we're in now. His opponent, Democrat Jack Conway said Paul's facts are all wrong. It's been said religion and politics don't mix, but on Wednesday about 400 people at the Cayce United Methodist Church in Fulton, Kentucky, did mix with guest Rand Paul. While at the annual barbecue, Paul had lots to say about lots of things and he said he's against the historic financial reform bill signed into law today. "I don't want to give more power to an agency that I think led us down the course, and recession we're in," said Paul. Conway declined a phone interview with Local 6, but he did release a statement saying that the measure contains useful tools, holding banks and financial firms to task, and ending taxpayer bailouts. Paul disagrees. He is completely against the bill and said it will hurt Kentuckians. "No banks failed in Kentucky, but a lot of regulations will be on Kentucky banks," says Paul. "They think the answer is government. We think the answer is capitalism, free enterprise, private jobs.". Conway said Paul is basing his policy on bad information. While the candidates disagree on a lot, they do agree on the impact this law will have. We also asked Paul if he agreed on extending unemployment benefits. He said yes but only if the money comes from an existing source, like federal stimulus money. Paul is challenging Conway to a half-dozen debates before the general election this November. A Conway spokeswoman said they'll consider the offer. Everyone will have a chance to meet the candidates at the annual Fancy Farm political picnic on August 7. |
