An affordable health care success story

Carlise County, Ky.- Carol Kelley started months ago trying to figure out how her health insurance would be affected once the Affordable Care Act took effect. It didn't take long for her to feel frustrated and overwhelmed.
"There are so many different plans and different deductibles and different coverage for each plan," she said. She discovered West Kentucky Allied Services and someone who could help walk her through the process.

Currently, Kelley is paying $506 a month for her coverage. She found a plan with a premium of $503, but then was told she wouldn't have to pay that full amount.

That's because Kelley qualified for a $352 government subsidy.

"I had no idea I would qualify for a subsidy," she said. Kelley didn't even ask about them because she owns land and has a savings account in the bank. Then she learned that wasn't taken into account and the limits for a single person were higher than she thought.

Jackie Eubanks, Kynect program manager, told Local 6 a lot of people are surprised to learn  the same thing.

A family of two can make up to $62,040.00 and a family of four can make up to $94,200.00 and still be eligible for government help.

Eubanks said each case is different, but all people have to do is go online or talk to a Kynector in person to find out if they qualify.

Kelley said she wants others to know it's worth the time you might spend in the office and thinks there are more people out there who will be as successful as she.

"Not only am I paying less for the premium, but my coverage is actually better" she said.

You need to sign up for a plan by December 15 in order for the new coverage to kick in on January 1, 2014.

"Starting January 1, I will only be paying $151.00 so I'm saving by the month $355.00," she said.
