MARSHALL COUNTY, KY-  Walking into District Court Monday afternoon Cory Burkeen kept his head down.

Burkeen, 24, was careful not to make eye contact with anyone.  But, the very sight of him reduced Lisa Lovett to tears.  After all, he was walking in and her daughter, Landon remains hospitalized in Nashville.

Landon Lovett and Shane McKenty were critically injured in a crash on Highway 95 in Marshall County in May.

Burkeen had been behind the wheel when his vehicle plowed into a truck carrying Lovett, McKenty, and two other teens.  After a several months long investigation, Burkeen was arrested Wednesday.  Toxicology reports showed he was under the influence of Valium and Klonopin.

He is charged with wanton endangerment, assault, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

During Monday's proceedings, Burkeen stood stone-faced, never reacting to the judge's words.  In the end, he plead not guilty to the charges he is facing.

Burkeen is due back in court for a preliminary hearing October 17th.  He has also been charged in connection to an August robbery and will answer to those charges Wednesday.
