Authorities believe church burglary, attempted burglary related

Gerran Thomas

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. - A boarded up basement door shows where thieves got in. Breaking a lock before starting a path of damage seemingly without end.

"The damage is probably worse than what they stole," said Bill Dowell.

Dowell said someone stole a microwave and upstairs, tore a flat screen TV off the wall, smashed a glass mirror in the men's bathroom and then slammed stall walls before moving down the hall.

"The bookcase was mounted to the wall they pulled it out and dumped it on the floor," Dowell said. "All the books were everywhere on the floor. It was a pretty good mess there."

But there was more. In the pastor's office, a modem is gone and Bill Miller said things don't add up. Some rooms destroyed and others left untouched. All and all, the church is out cash and will have to spend thousands to fix the mess.

"It kind of gets to you because we are here trying to help folks and this is like a slap in the face," said paBill Miller.

Someone tried to break into the Spring Bayou Baptist Church not far away. This time an alarm went off and scared the would be burglars away.

Detectives believe the vandalism and thefts are likely the work of young teens and believe the two cases are related.

"The Bible tells us not to grow weary in doing well and doing good things," Miller said. "You wonder sometimes but God has a plan for it all."

But, the church said nobody was hurt and material things can be replaced. They plan to move forward, serving the community and praying for whoever could have committed the crime.
