CARBONDALE, Ill. - Ask most smokers and they'll tell you quitting isn't easy.
"It's hard to quit sometimes. You get that edginess," said SIU student Kory Schulein. "It sort of became a habit. It's something to do. I get that feeling every now and then it's about that time to have one."
Caleb Nehring works for the American Cancer Cociety and is bringing the quit smoking campaign to the halls of SIU.
"When you're in college you might not think of things you do now that might have long term consequences," said Nehring.
Schulein said he's thinking more about the here and now.
"When I'm stressed especially writing a paper, I get those moments when I just got to take a break. I like to pace, have a cigarette," he said.
But the consequences of smoking can have lifetime effects.
"It's going to turn your teeth yellow," Nehring said. "It's going to make your hands, your clothes stink. I know these sound practical but I think it's who you're talking to depends on what kinds of message you try to send."
Schulein said it's his right to take a break in between classes to light one up.
"Really, it's a personal decision. It's how you feel about it."
