UPDATE (Wednesday, 11:12 a.m.): The body found inside a car in a southern Illinois corn field has been identified as 50-year-old Philip Adams, of Benton, Illinois.

Earlier story (from Tuesday):

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ill. - A man has been found dead in a southern Illinois corn field.

Franklin County Coroner Marty Leffler says he was called to the South Hill City Road scene just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

According to Leffler's news release, a passerby noticed a car in the corn field.  When the driver stopped to check it out, a man's body was inside.  The driver called police.

Leffler says they've identified the body as that of a 50-year-old Benton man, but they are withholding the individual's name until the family has been notified.

The death is under investigation and Leffler says alcohol is thought to be a factor in the man's death.

An autopsy is planned for Wednesday morning.
