Field fire quickly burns 100 acres, firefighters treated for heat exhaustionCARRIER MILLS, Ill. — A field fire kept firefighters busy for most of the evening Friday. Saline County Central Dispatch recieved a report of a large field fire around 4:30 p.m. Friday on Duncan Road, five miles southwest of Carrier Mills. Nealry 100 acres of field and brush were burned very quickly on former Will Scarlet Mine property. The uneven terrain and thick grass and brush caused the fire to burn quickly and caused firefighters a few challenges. At least five firemen were treated at the scene for heat exhaustion and one was taken to Harrisburg Medical Center for heat exhaustion. Firemen were still on scene late into the evening putting out hot spots. The fire was under control by 6 p.m. Firefighters from Carrier Mills, Stonefort, Harrisburg, New Burnside, Williamson County Fire Protection and U.S. Forest Service responded to the fire. The cause of the fire is still inder investigation but a cigarette may have started the blaze. |
